Associate Degree of Applied Business in Paralegal Studies

Overview
Lakewood College offers a two-year associate degree in paralegal studies. Students in the program take courses that cover legal research, various legal fields, and the legal process. The courses are taught by experienced attorneys. Paralegal students also enroll in other related classes in fields like accounting, English, and political science, as well as in a core of general college classes.

In addition, students are trained in the job responsibilities of a practicing paralegal, through the completion of a practical skills exercises, taught throughout the course by experienced attorneys and paralegals. The practical exercises give students an opportunity to work with simulated cases and to learn calendaring, tickler systems, document production and management, file organization and maintenance, and other paralegal skills. Paralegal students are also trained to use various computer software programs and to access and search on-line resources.

Upon completion of the associate degree in paralegal studies, Lakewood College graduates are eligible to take the voluntary certified legal assistant examination administered by the National Association of Legal Assistants. Although not required for employment, national and state certification is recognized by many law offices as an indication of competence in the field.
